Moving Tips

Moving can be stressful. Here are some tips to help you through it.

Plan ahead: Try to plan for your move as early as you can to ensure that you find a reputable company. You don't want just anybody handling your life's possessions.

Downsize and get rid of unwanted items: Now is the time to get rid of those unwanted items. There are many donation companies that can come out and pick the items up. You could also have a garage sale or use one of the many online marketplaces to sell items and make a little extra cash.

Get the little stuff out of the way: It's best to handle your priceless or very important small items in your personal vehicle if possible. Same goes for small plants, odd items, or the items you'll need immediate access to as they'll be hard to get to when they're buried in a big boxed truck with your whole house packed inside. Label or designate an area for any items that you don't want moved by others.

Tape and label boxes: To ensure you're belongings make it to the right rooms and areas in your new home it's best to label your boxes with the items inside and/or the room or area they're meant for at your new house. Also, point out any quirks or interesting things that your moving company should be aware of such as weak, loose, previously broken or repaired.

Keep an eye on pets and kids or get a sitter: Moving can be stressful for pets and kids too! There are boxes everywhere and weird strangers entering and leaving the house frequently. To help them feel safe and comfortable, and to keep entryways clear and freely open, it may be best for kids and pets to be in a different area of the house during the move or with a sitter. Walkways need to be free and clear to lower the chances for accidents to occur.

Put in a forward address request with your Post Office: To ensure you're not missing or losing any mail during your move be sure to request a mail forward through your post office and put in a change of address with all the appropriate banks, utilities, and billing companies.
